Drinking Healthier Alcohol for Less Hangovers

I hear so many complaints from people as they get into their thirties, try to lose weight/eat healtheir, or even begin dealing with health issues, that their bodies can’t handle drinking anymore. However, I believe most hangovers are made so awful from the crap: sugar, artificial colors, etc. that you are drinking as well.

I’m here to give you a challenge — why don’t you give some healthier cocktails a try and see if that helps? Reference my gluten free cocktails and parties blogs (or this delicious recipe) to get started! Or if margaritas are your thing, you may also want try this spicy Hot Honey Peach Margarita.

Top Choice = Tequila

You will see many different types of liquors used in these recipes as I add to the archives, however, as time goes on you may begin to see the bulk of them include tequila. There’s a reason for this! Per many sources, such as Business Insider, tequila is one of the healthiest liquors available. However, make sure you grab tequila blanco; it is low in the chemicals that can cause a hangover as well as made exclusively from plants and not from grains (best for those gluten or grain free). Check out this list from Food and Wine for the high quality blanco tequilas!

Are Margaritas Gluten Free?

Typically, margaritas contain gluten free ingredients. However, it is important to choose a high quality tequila and orange liqueur. My personal favorite orange liqueur is Cointreau. Learn more about why in the article, Is Cointreau Gluten Free?

Raspberries-Margs

Healthy Watermelon Raspberry Margaritas

These margaritas are made with nothing but tequila and fresh ingredients. Watermelon is pureed and strainer to make a liquid form. Raspberries are pressed to remove the seeds from the juice. Then, both are mixed together with lime juice, a small amount of honey, and tequila. The tequila is a great base, the lime and raspberry bring the fresh and tart flavor, and the watermelon juice makes it all so refreshing! To make yours fancier, add rims to your margarita glasses (or use a glass beverage dispenser works better for beach and outdoor pool parties, etc).

I hope you enjoy these cleaner cocktails! Here’s to regaining our sparkle together,

Prep Time 15 minutes mins
Total Time 15 minutes mins
Servings 2

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh watermelon juice takes about 3 cups seedless watermelon cubes (1/8 a watermelon)
  • ½ cup raspberry juice (let a 12 oz bag of frozen raspberries thaw and strain juices; this works much better than fresh as it ensures the raspberries were sweet and picked at their prime ripeness for better flavor)
  • 2 tablespoon fresh squeezed lime juice made easy with a citrus squeezer/juicer
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 3 oz silver Tequila*
  • 2 margarita glasses (these are the ones pictured)
  • 2 tablespoon sea salt fine grind

Instructions

  • Make the watermelon juice. Add seedless watermelon cubes into a blender and pulse until completely blended. Pour contents through a mesh strainer to remove pulp from the juice.
  • Strain the raspberries (may need to press slightly with a spoon to get the juice through and remove the seeds).
  • Add everything but the tequila to a large cocktail shaker. Shake well (or vigorously whisk contents in a bowl/liquid measuring cup if you do not have a large shaker).
  • Wet the edge of each margarita glass and then rim with the sea salt.
  • Fill two glasses halfway with ice. Add one serving of tequila (1.5 oz) to each glass of ice then split the watermelon-raspberry mixture between the two glasses. Stir well.

Notes

*I recommend using blanco Tequila as opposed to gold as some gold versions may have additional ingredients mixed in (such as caramel coloring).
