These easy sweet potato dog treats are loved by your furry friends, nutritious, and contain only one ingredient – sweet potatoes! They are super easy to make as they are pretty much the equivalent of sweet potato jerky/dehydrated sweet potato. Plus, they seem to be well-taken by dogs with a touchy stomach (or worked for my dog at least).

Can Dogs Eat Sweet Potatoes/Are They Good for Dogs?

Did you know that PetMD says “vets give the OK when it comes to dogs and sweet potatoes! In fact, sweet potatoes are considered a healthy treat for dogs and offer lots of nutritional value for your pooch.”

My little shih tzu had lived in an apartment with me where I unfortunately eventually found a lot of mold. She had some of the same health issues I had after leaving. I wound up on a gluten free diet and she ended up on Hill’s® Prescription Diet® for Skin/Food Sensitives (z/d). She used to get sick from even the slightest crumb of food that wasn’t her food, but seemed to tolerate 1-2 of these sweet potato chews, so I deemed it a win for fragile stomachs. I was overjoyed that she could handle an occasional special treat.

Ingredients/How to Make Sweet Potato Dog Treats

All that’s needed for this recipe is 3 organic sweet potatoes!

They will need to be scrubbed clean (not peeled), cut into 1/3” thick slices, and added to two large sheet pans covered in parchment paper. Bake them for about 3 hours at 250°F. Remove them from the oven when chewy or crunchy depending on your preference – the first time you may want to experiment with both and see if your dog has a preference. The time may vary depending on the thickness and width of your slices.

FAQ

Do I have to peel sweet potatoes?

You don’t if they are scrubbed very clean. Any remaining mold or dirt on the skin can be bad for your dog.

How long does it take to dehydrate the sweet potatoes?

You can use 3 hours as an estimate, however, it can vary based on the thickness and desired texture.

How thin should the sweet potatoes be sliced for the dog chews?

About 1/3” thick slices.

Can people eat these as well?

Yes, these are perfectly safe to enjoy with your furry friend!

Storage

Dehydrated sweet potatoes can be stored for a very long time if perfectly dried, however, these are a little bit thicker, and I like to make sure things are extra safe as my dog is sensitive. So, I’d recommend (once fully cooled) storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a couple weeks.

I was so glad I came across the recipe below and was finally able to join the other dog Moms and make my baby some homemade treats! Of course she loves them <3! So please take this moment and let your furry friends live the healthy life with you as well…

Enjoy! Here’s to (people and dogs) regaining our sparkle together,

Servings 35 small treats

Ingredients

  • 2-3 large sweet potatoes

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 250°F.
  • There is no need to peel, but make sure to scrub the sweet potatoes well (any remaining mold or dirt on the skin can be bad for your dog).
  • Cut each sweet potato into 1/3” thick slices. The thinner you slice the sweet potatoes, the shorter the cooking time you will need.
  • Line two large sheet pans with parchment paper.
  • Lay pieces evenly (in one layer) on the parchment paper.
  • Bake them for about 3 hours. Remove from oven when chewy or crunchy depending on your preference. The time may vary depending on the thickness and width of your slices.

Notes

*Toss any sweet potatoes with visual signs of mold, as mold can be bad for your dog.
*Variations: You can also use a dehydrator. You may also decide to use a little olive oil or sprinkle cinnamon on the sweet potatoes if desired.
*Monitor your dog and adjust the size of the pieces so they do not present a choking hazard. Additionally, as with any new food, watch your dog carefully (or consult with a vet) to make sure their body handles it appropriately. My dog is super sensitive to most foods and loved them, but I can’t speak for everyone’s dog.
