Pigs in a blanket are the ultimate easy party appetizer or snack…and now they can be easily made gluten free! Enjoy flaky and delicious wrapped smoked sausages in a cute mini size perfect for the holidays, tailgating, party appetizers, and more.
Gluten Free Pigs in a Blanket Ingredients
Gluten Free Puff Pastry
There are two main ingredients in these gluten free pigs in blanket. The most important one is the puff pastry. You are welcome to make this yourself, but due to time constraints when party planning, I use pre-made dough. Schar offers a box of gluten free puff pastry dough that was amazing, and I was able to create 48 mini pigs in a blanket (24 from each roll).
Another pre-made option that can be used is gluten free crescent rolls. While I was not able to find these in a refrigerated or frozen mix, there are easy mix options such as Mom’s mix which will make the process a lot faster.
Gluten Free Hot Dogs/Pigs
The only other ingredient required in gluten free pigs in a blanket are the pigs! Gluten free cocktail weenies or gluten free smoked sausages will work perfectly for this. Make sure to check the packages for gluten. However, some great options can be found in this article: Gluten Free Little Smokies.
Toppings & Sauces
The rest of these ingredients are completely up to you. If you’d like a basic egg wash to help brown the pastry, you will need an egg and some water. For toppings, if desired, you may like flakes or pieces of sea salt, sesame seeds, or an everything bagel spice mix.
This recipe also features an optional honey mustard sauce. You can easily buy this from your local store, but I prefer homemade as it tastes a little better and takes under a minute to make. For this sauce, you’d need: honey, mayonnaise, and Dijon mustard.
How to Make
Gather your ingredients. Make sure the puff pastry is ready to go and rolled flat (if you used Schar, make sure to thaw it in advance). Using a pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry roll into 24 triangles. Place a mini smoked sausage on the longer edge of the triangle and roll it up until fully wrapped.
Repeat until you have the desired amount of wrapped mini sausages. After placing them on a baking sheet, whisk together egg and water. Using a pastry brush, brush over top of the sausages, to create a golden-brown finish when baking.
In an oven preheated to 400°F bake them for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and sprinkle with a topping (I used sea salt) is desired. While cooling, mix together honey, mayonnaise, and Dijon mustard for a honey mustard dipping sauce.
Expert Tips
Serving: Try to make the pigs the day of serving; they’ll taste better. If they are done a little earlier than the time you plan to serve them, keep them warm in the oven (turned off) for up to an hour.
Reheating: If you still want to make these a day or two in advance, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator and then to reheat, warm them in the oven.
Making: This recipe is incredibly easy, so I don’t have too many tips for you! My main two are to use the egg wash to ensure a golden-brown finish, as well as to poke a few holes in the outside of each wrapping prior to baking to allow the steam to escape.
Recipe FAQs
I have not yet seen gluten free pigs in a blanket in the store or in the restaurant, but luckily these are super easy to make yourself.
I love to serve these as a party appetizer alongside other classic snack appetizer favorites such as: snack mixes, chicken wings, chips and dips, fruit and veggies, cocktail meatballs, nachos, and more.
These are the perfect mini size for: holidays, Halloween, tailgating, summer parties, barbeques, and any party/event where quick appetizers are desired.
Variations
Cheesy Pigs in a Blanket
Like your hot dogs a little cheesy? Prior to wrapping the hot dogs in puff pastry, cut a small slit from one end to the other. Fill it in with a small piece of cheese. Then wrap and bake the hot dogs per the regular recipe.
Dairy Free Pigs in a Blanket
Make sure to confirm on the label, but as most hot dogs are dairy free and so is the puff pastry dough used in this recipe; this recipe is already dairy free.
Larger (Non-mini Pigs in a Blanket)
Prefer your pigs in a blanket full-sized? Grab a pack of full-sized hot dogs and wrap them in a puff pastry roll cut into six pieces.
Healthier
The easiest way to make this recipe healthier is to use full size hot dogs cut into small pieces (instead of the wieners) or make your pigs in a blanket full-sized. The better brands of hot dogs are not available cocktail sized. Try healthier hot dog brands that utilize less ingredients, are uncured/have no nitrates added, and are organic when possible.
Storage and Reheating
These taste much better when made on the day of serving. However, if you really want to make them a day or two before, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To reheat, warm them in the oven.

(optional honey mustard dipping sauce)
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
